Organization Reaching for the Empowerment of Youth (OREY) is looking for young volunteers (ages 18+) to help at a Spring Volunteer Day on Saturday, June 6, 2015 in the Rockaways.  OREY volunteers will work in partnership with Friends of Rockaway ( to help prepare a home that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy for the homeowners to move in.  Tasks can include site preparation, hanging insulation or drywall, mudding, sanding, texturing, priming, painting, laying floors or hanging trim, doors and baseboard.  OREY is excited to once again partner with Friends of Rockaway, whose staff will be on-site to give training and provide supplies.  Transportation, water, lunch and snacks will be provided by OREY.  Details regarding transportation and timing TBD.  For more information and to register for OREY’s June 6th Volunteer Day, please email


OREY Volunteers Give Back- Assisting to Rebuild Communities in Harlem and Manhattan

This Spring, 33 OREY volunteers helped to give back by giving up their time to volunteer in two OREY Volunteer Days.  On May 10th, 27 volunteers went to Harlem River Park in Manhattan for a Spring Clean Up Day in partnership with New Yorkers for Parks.  The group of volunteers weeded and picked up garbage to help prepare the park for spring.  Then on June 14th, five OREY volunteers spent the day rebuilding a house in the Rockaways in partnership with Friends of Rockaways.  Thanks to support from Repair the World,, OREY was able to organize the volunteer days with no cost to the volunteers.

OREY Volunteers Needed for Spring Clean-Up Day at Harlem River Park on Saturday May 10th

Spend your day volunteering with students and young adults cleaning up Harlem River Park to prepare for the warm weather!

Organization Reaching for the Empowerment of Youth (OREY) is looking for young volunteers to help at a Spring Clean Up Day at Harlem River Park on Saturday, May 10th from 9 am to 12 pm.  Harlem River Park is still working to recover from the damage left by Hurricane Sandy, which resulted in parts of the park being completely underwater.  OREY volunteers will work in partnership with New Yorkers for Parks ( to help prepare the park for the warm weather by picking up trash, painting fences and weeding flower beds.  Supplies, water and snacks will be provided.

OREY’s 2014 Volunteer Opportunities

Spend a day out of your Spring Break to help those in need!
Organization Reaching for the Empowerment of Youth (OREY) is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing assistance to the victims of natural disasters nationwide. OREY involves youth and young adults in the rebuilding effort by linking them with appropriately chosen placements in needy communities.  OREY will be organizing one or two volunteer days a month in February, March, April and May, for youth and young adults to volunteer in New York City.   Volunteers will have the opportunity to aid those that are still recovering from the devastation from Hurricane Sandy.  A wide variety of opportunities from working in a food pantry to clean-up days to rebuilding will be available.  Thanks to support from a grant from Repair the World, transportation to and from the volunteer site, along with meals will be provided.

OREY will receive the Sandy Recovery Award on December 3, 2013 at the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty’s (Met Council) 8th Annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration.  The event, which will be held at the Steelcase Showroom in Manhattan, celebrates the service of countless volunteers that help make the Met Council’s programs happen.

OREY will be recognized for our over 200 hours of service in the Rockaways and Coney Island, where over 30 volunteers provided assistance to families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of OREY’s volunteers, we were able to provide supplies in the weeks after the storm hit, assist with Passover cleaning, pack and distribut
e Passover boxes at a food pantry, gut a community theatre and pass out information on recovery resources to neighborhood businesses.
